about

“New Directions” is more than that. Tatopani’s fourth CD, and counting, sets off in search of fresh tracks but with the cumulative savvy of five musicians who know how to hit the musical road with exploratory energy and the deep experience of years of musical traveling.

The original trio of Andy Bevan, Christopher Hardy and Robert Belgrade first started playing together in 1993. Over the years, they have all pursued further mastery of what totals to more than a dozen different instruments. With the addition of new pianist Frederic Viennot and cellist/guitarist Harutoshi Ito, the disparate traditions come together in flying polyrhythms and searching emotions to create an even richer and more expansive sound.

This is assuredly contemporary world music, though this trio-turned-quartet-turned-quintet brings together a diversity of genres — world, jazz, classical, acoustic and ethnic. And you could keep going. The important point is that the music intrigues and engages in ways that don’t get stuck inside labels or genres. Instead, the excitement of the journey, and the richness of new blends, can be heard on every track.

The pieces on this release revel in a symphonic splendor that never feels distant or on a stage. Their layered textures stay intimate. You feel the warmth but can envision the vast soundscape.

This is a recording to savor with every re-listen. The layered instrumentation, rhythmic delight and melodic fluidity move in new directions, towards new pleasures.
